How it works
Open the page and start writing. Each document is saved on this device a moment after you stop typing, and the word count, reading time and readability update as you go. Use the toolbar or the keyboard for headings, bold, italic, lists, quotes and links. They are written as Markdown, so the text stays clean and portable, and the marks fade into the background so the words come first.
When you want nothing else on screen, choose Focus. The toolbar and side panels disappear and only the page is left. Typewriter scrolling keeps the line you are on in the middle of the screen, which helps on long drafts.
Your documents stay on this device
Documents, versions and sources are stored in this browser, not on a server. You can keep as many documents as you like, search them, rename, copy and delete them. A version is kept every ten minutes while you write, and you can save a named version before a big rewrite and go back to it at any time.
Because nothing is uploaded, clearing this site's data in your browser also removes your documents. Choose Back up everything now and then to download one file with all of them, and Restore a backup to bring them back here or on another computer.
Spelling and grammar
The checker runs on your device. It downloads once, about 16 MB, and then underlines spelling mistakes in red, grammar in blue and style suggestions in purple. Put the cursor on an underlined word to see the suggestion right there, or work through the list in the side panel. Accept a fix, ignore it for this document, or add a name or term to your dictionary, which is shared with the grammar checker.
Citations and bibliographies
Add the websites, articles, books and videos you use under Sources, choose APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago or Harvard, and press Cite to put an in-text citation where the cursor is. Add bibliography writes a reference list at the end of the document, sorted the way the style expects, and the same button updates it later. Details are typed in by hand, because this page never connects to outside services.
Exporting
Export to Word for teachers, editors and colleagues, to PDF for a fixed copy with real, selectable text, to Markdown or plain text for other apps, or to a simple web page. Headings, bold, italic, lists, quotes, links and tables carry over.
Keyboard shortcuts

Good to know
The checker understands English only. Pictures are not part of the editor, so image links are left out of Word and PDF files. Documents live in one browser on one device until you move them with a backup file.
Questions
Can I open a Word document?
Yes. Open a file accepts .docx, Markdown and plain text. Word documents are turned into text with headings, bold, italic, lists and links, and become a new document here.
Does it work offline?
Once the page and the checker have loaded, writing, saving, checking and exporting all work without a connection.
Is there a limit on length?
No set limit. Book-length drafts work, and only the paragraphs you change are checked again, so long documents stay quick.
