    What do I need?

    Letter grades use a common US scale: A+ 97 and up, A 93, A− 90, B+ 87, B 83, B− 80, C+ 77, C 73, C− 70, D+ 67, D 63, D− 60, F below 60. Your school’s scale may differ.

How a weighted grade is worked out

Each grade is multiplied by its weight, the products are added up, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights. With homework 92% worth 20%, quizzes 85% worth 20% and a midterm 78% worth 25%, that is (92 × 20 + 85 × 20 + 78 × 25) ÷ 65 = 84.46%. Dividing by the weight entered so far, rather than by 100, gives your average on the work that has been graded.

What you need on the rest

The weight still to come is 100% minus the weight entered. To finish on a target, you need (target × 100 − average × weight entered) ÷ weight remaining as your average on what is left. In the example, 35% of the weight remains, and finishing on 85% needs 86% on it. If the answer is over 100%, the target is out of reach without extra credit; if it is 0% or less, you are already there.

      Percent or points

Switch to Points to type points earned and points possible for each row, such as 45 out of 50. Each row is turned into a percentage before it is weighted, so a 10-point quiz and a 200-point exam count only by their weights. Grades above 100% from extra credit are fine.

      Privacy
