Compress a video to a size you choose

Largest size

Smaller videos are never enlarged. Keeping the original size lets the picture be copied without re-encoding when the new format allows it.

Make it smaller than

The result is an MP4 that lands just under the limit. 1 MB here is 1,000,000 bytes, so it also fits services that count a little more generously.

Everything happens on this device, so there is no upload to wait for and no copy of your video on anyone else’s server.

Converting between formats

MP4 is the safest choice: it plays on phones, TVs, editing apps and every major website. WebM suits web pages, MOV is the QuickTime format used by Apple software, and MKV is a flexible container that holds almost anything. When the picture inside your file is already in a form the new format accepts, it is copied across untouched, which is fast and loses no quality. Otherwise it is re-encoded at high quality, and sound that the new format can’t hold is converted to AAC or Opus.

How compressing to a size works

A file’s size is its bitrate multiplied by its length. The tool takes your limit, keeps a small safety margin for the file’s own structure, sets aside enough for clear sound and gives the rest to the picture. If that leaves too few bits for the current resolution, the video is scaled down, because a sharp 720p clip looks better than a blocky 1080p one. Encoders don’t always hit their target exactly, so if the first result is over the limit it is redone once at a lower bitrate. The final size is shown against your limit.

Tips for the best result

Short clips compress far better than long ones, so trim away anything you don’t need first. Busy footage with lots of movement needs more data than a talking head. Email services usually allow 25 MB in total, but attachments grow by about a third while they are sent, so for email a limit near 18 MB is safer. Free Discord accounts accept files up to 10 MB.

Private by design

Your browser opens the video, re-encodes it with its own built-in video engine and offers the download straight from memory. Nothing is uploaded, so family videos, client work and screen recordings stay on this device. Very long or high-resolution videos need plenty of memory, so a computer handles bigger files than a phone.
