Working

Every result updates as you type and shows the working with your own numbers.

How salary and hourly pay convert

Everything goes through a yearly figure. An hourly rate is multiplied by hours per week and weeks per year, so 25 an hour for 40 hours over 52 weeks is 52,000 a year. That yearly figure is then divided by 2,080 hours, 260 days, 52 weeks, 26 two-week periods or 12 months. Change the hours, days or weeks to match your own pattern, for example 37.5 hours, or 48 weeks if you take four weeks unpaid.

What the take-home estimate does, and does not do

It takes your gross pay, subtracts any pre-tax deductions, applies the income tax rate and the other deductions rate you type in to what is left, then subtracts any fixed after-tax deductions. It does not know any country’s tax rules, brackets, allowances or credits, so it is only as good as the rates you enter. For a real figure, use your payslip, your tax authority’s own calculator or a qualified adviser. Your effective rate, the share of your whole pay that goes in tax, is usually lower than your top bracket.

    Adding and removing sales tax

To add tax, multiply the price by the rate: 100 at 8.25% is 8.25 of tax and 108.25 in total. To take tax out of a total that already includes it, divide by one plus the rate: 108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = 100. Subtracting 8.25% of the total would give the wrong answer, because the tax was worked out on the smaller price.

    Percentage change and percentage difference

Percentage change measures from a starting value: going from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase, while going from 100 back to 80 is a 20% decrease. Percentage difference compares two values with neither as the starting point, dividing the gap by their average, so 80 and 100 differ by 22.22% whichever way round they are. A change from 0 cannot be written as a percentage.
